Botox or Filler? Here's How I Decide
Neurotoxin: muscle relaxation
Neurotoxin works by affecting the nerve fibers that signal your muscles to contract. That muscle relaxation is what gives you the rejuvenated look, such as softer forehead lines, less of an "11" between the brows, smoother crow's feet. It lasts about 3-4 months, until it wears out of the body naturally. And beyond the cosmetic result, it also helps prevent skin breakdown caused by muscle overuse. So, it's doing more than just smoothing what's already there.
Dermal Filler: structure and support
Filler is a different tool. It gives structure and support back to areas that have lost volume such as cheeks, lips, jawline, under-eyes, and marionette lines. That added support is what helps give a youthful appearance, since so much of aging is about lost structure, not just lines. Filler lasts longer than Botox, typically 9-12 months depending on the area and your own metabolism.
The easy way to remember it
If the wrinkles show up when your face moves, we need Botox. If the wrinkles and loss volume are there even when your face is still, we need filler. A lot of my patients need both, and that's exactly why I don't recommend anything without a full facial assessment first. No two faces age the same way, so no two plans should look the same either.
Why does this matter?
I've seen it happen too many times, filler placed where Botox was needed, or the other way around. The patient walks away disappointed, not because the product failed, but because it was the wrong tool for the job. That's the difference experience makes. It's not just what we inject it, it's knowing exactly where, why, and how much.
